An independent scholar traces the life and travels in 724-6 AD of Bavarian Bishop Willibald of Eichstätt, written down 50 years later, the most documented pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the early Islamic period. Aist situates Willibald's perceptions of holy sites in Jerusalem and hardships encountered en route in the topographical, narrative, and archeological contexts of biblical, Byzantine, and Crusader sources, and his understanding of the Christian life as an analogous difficult journey. The volume includes site maps; an annotated summary of his itinerary; and summary tables of miraculous healings associated with Williabad, who experienced a miraculous healing in childhood, and other pilgrims of the period.
